Structure of Sunday School
Our goal is to offer the very best Adult Sunday School classes we possibly can at FPO. 2 Tim. 3:16-17 says, and we believe, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness”. It is for this very reason we strive to offer classes where both members and attenders are actively engaging with God’s Word in order to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the Christian faith and how it is lived out on a daily basis. Classes cover a wide range of topics including studies in the books of the Bible, Christian theology, marriage, parenting, finances, work, Christian apologetics, and how to share your faith, just to name a few. All these classes are discussion-oriented in nature, giving those attending an opportunity to ask questions as they seek to apply to their lives the truths learned. The classes are separated into four blocks during the year: Fall(12 weeks), Winter(6 weeks), Spring(13 weeks), and Summer(10 weeks). During each of these blocks we usually offer two classes which meet either in the fellowship hall or the Chapel. Childcare is available at this time.
Why Attend Sunday School?
Since the focus of Sundays tends to be on the main worship service, one might wonder whether Sunday School is a bit superfluous. After all, isn’t the main service enough? Although this is a good question to ask, it unfortunately approaches Sunday from the wrong perspective. It begins the discussion by first asking about the minimum requirements that we are obligated to fulfill on Sunday, instead of what opportunities there are to be greatly blessed and encouraged by. We should not be asking, “What must I do on Sunday to fulfill my obligations?”, but rather, “What can I do to encourage my walk with Christ?” When we ask this question, then we will find good reason to attend Sunday School.
Consider the following:
- Solid Biblical Teaching. We are blessed to have a number of gifted teachers, pastors, and elders in our congregation that are able to offer high quality teaching from God’s word. Sunday School is a rare opportunity to build a deeper understanding of the Christian worldview. For more, see our current Sunday School classes.
- Need for ongoing Discipleship. We all have a need in our life to continue to be trained, encouraged, sharpened, and challenged in our walks with God. The main Worship Service is a crucial part of this process, but is not able to fill every need. Sunday School is a chance to be trained and taught on a more personal and interactive level.
- Convenient and God-Ordained Time. We all live such busy lives that it is hard to find the time to learn more about the God we serve. However, God in his infinite wisdom has set aside one day of the week for that very purpose (Ex. 20:8-11). Sunday mornings rarely contain scheduling conflicts or other obligations that can keep us from coming to Sunday School. Moreover, nursery is provided so that parents can focus upon the class without distraction.
- Relationships and Fellowship. Sunday School is also an opportunity to deepen our relationships with fellow believers in the church. Sunday School prevents us from learning in isolation and provides an opportunity to learn within the context of a loving community where we can sharpen and encourage one another.
