  • gods vs. God
2-5-12, Genesis 30:25-31:55: Something strange happens as Jacob is seeking his freedom from Laban - in spite of the schemes of his master, which seemed bound to trap Jacob in Haran for years and years to come, Jacob quickly accumulates enough livestock to head out on his own. Two theories are put before us in these chapters as to how everythimng changed for Jacob. It might have been the Mesopotamian tricks and multi-colored sticks that Jacob used to alter the flocks. Or, it might have been the providential hand of the God of Bethel. Moses does not come out and tell us which theory is the true one, but he does not have to. Sarcasm, humor and graphic imagery make clear which God is true, powerful and to be feared, and which gods are false, impotent and so nasty that you do not want to touch them.

  • God Will Be God
1-29-12, Genesis 29:31-30:24: We look at these events from the two different perspectives that Moses puts forward. From one angle, everything is as it should be - serene, in order, God doing what God does. From the other angle, we see a soap opera - women pulled about by their passions as if on a leash. What is the point? Even when people are people, pulled about every which way by their passions and emotions, God is God, rock-solid and steady in his committments and purposes. In this study, we see the face of our changeless God and spell out some of the implications of his character for the life of his people.

  • Providence, Discipline and the Cross of Christ
1-22-12, Genesis 29:1-30: In this chapter, Jacob really takes it on the chin. But rather than settling for sub-Christian morality lessons, we seek to see through these events something real and lasting about providence, discipline and the cross of Christ, all on the way to a total transformation of the way that we view the hardships and sufferings of our lives.

  • The Presence of God
1-15-12, Genesis 28:10-22: What would it take to break someone of their tendency to live as if they are the only person in the world committed to themeselves? Apparently, the life of Jacob would suggest, it would take more than simply hearing that the Lord is committed to you. The dream of the stairway to heaven helps us to see that which we must see if our tight grip on our self-involvement will be broken - the One who is unconditionally committed to us is the One who is powerfully present with us.

  • Beauty Amidst the Carnage
1-8-12, Genesis 27: We enter chapter 27 to find a total mess. Sinful schemes, faithless plans and bold face lies seem to form the perfect storm, strong enough to blow the purposes of God right off of their foundations. And yet, even after the storm clears, there stand those purposes of God, unmoved and unscathed. Indeed, the very schemes and lies that threatened to undo them have become the means by which they came to pass. So, what is the picture supposed to do to us? The goal is to exalt the sovereign, gracious purposes of God so highly that our hearts and minds are trained to surrender to them.
