The FPC Opelika Pulpit
Sermons from the pulpit of the First Presbyterian Church (EPC) of Opelika, Alabama, by the Rev. Scott Bowen

  • Family History
7-25-10 - Psalm 106: You know the experience of filling out your family history at the doctor. Well, this Psalm surveys our spiritual family history. It is filled with the disease of spiritual amnesia. But we see that ours is a family that God has remembered over and over again in a unique way - through a mediator.

  • Reason to Sing
7-4-10, Psalm 104: The Psalmist walks us through creation, from the heavens to the rock badger, detailing the way that all of it continually looks to God. It was a subtle dig at the prevailing view of the gods in his day, and it remains in our day a challenge to the practical deism which we embrace through our attempts at self-sufficiency. But in the challenge there is relief - the King of creation opens his hands to us in Christ.

  • Bless Me, Because I Deserve It
6-27-10 - Psalm 26: There is a clear tension seen from the opening line of the Psalm. At times, the author seems to ask God to vindicate him on the grounds of his merit. At other times, it seems that he is asking God to vindicate him purely out of grace. Which one is it? And how do those of us who can\'t match the integrity of the Psalmist pray this prayer? The answer leads us into the wonder of the gospel.

  • Faithfulness in a Foreign Land
6-20-10, Psalm 137: How shall we sing our songs in a foreign land? The question of the Psalmist is as relevant today as ever, even in a red state in the Bible belt. In this study, we see what our captivity looks like, and then answer the question for ourselves - what does faithful living here look like?

  • The Thrill is Gone
6-13-10, Psalm 85: CS Lewis said that the closest thing that people have to constancy is undulation - the repeated return to a level from which we repeatedly fall. The cry of Psalm 85 is an affirmation of that. How do we respond when we find ourselves dull and lifeless? That is our question in this study.
