  • The Making of a King: True Repentance
5-19-13, 1 Samuel 26 - We have heard this story before. David has a chance to kill Saul. He does not do it. Saul sees the kindness of David and promises to change. Chapter 26 tells a similar story to chapter 24, but it is no mere repetition. Rather, the similar stories set up a great picture of repentance. David and Saul are presented with the opportunity to do the very thing that they just promised they would never do again. One of them returns like a dog to his vomit, and the other continues on in the way of faith. The contrast instructs us in the difference between repentance that is true, and repentance so-called, drawing us in to the manner, marks and necessity of true, godly repentance.

  • The Making of a King: Beautiful Savior
5-12-13, 1 Samuel 25 - Just after his triumph of faith in the cave, David runs into a fool of a man who refuses his request for food. In a great departure from what we saw in the cave with Saul, David, fueled by wounded pride, gathers an army to carry out revenge against the man. And he would have done it...had it not been for a beautiful woman who intervenes to prevent him from doing the evil he desired to do. That woman leads us to our beautiful savior, who does more than merely clean up the mess of our sin...he intervenes to prevent us from the sin we otherwise would gladly do.

  • The Making of a King: No Time to Kill
5-5-13, 1 Samuel 24 - With the swing of a sword, the long ordeal of David at the hands of Saul could have been done. And yet, in the face of what his men saw to be a clear open door for David to act, David does not kill Saul. In David's restraint, we have a picture of a man who walks the way of the cross - not doing what he wants to do when he wants to do it how he things it should be done, but persevering, enduring, suffering, waiting on the Lord to act. It is a picture of our Christ, and of seeking the kingdom in Christ.

  • The Making of a King: A Man of Many Companions...
4-28-13, 1 Samuel 23 - Over the course of the chapter, we see the friends of David become his enemies, and his enemies become his friends. The ebb and flow of his allies highlights for us the words of Proverbs 17, that the man of may companions may still come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Our study of this chapter looks at the ways in which God befriends David, all of which point us to the way that, in Christ, God is still befriending his people. In the end, with David, we are able to say with confidence and freedom that the Lord is our helper, the upholder of our lives.

  • The Making of a King: A Cool Drink, A Bitter Pill
4-14-13, 1 Samuel 22 - 1 Samuel 22 has two distinct sections. In the first, the wisdom of God is on display in a way that makes it easy to savor and enjoy the confidence and encouragement that it offers. In the second, the wisdom of God makes us scratch our head in confusion and bewilderment. But what we learn is that whether it is a cool drink or a bitter pill, the wisdom of God by which he governs, directs and controls leads towards the fulfillment of his holy purposes and the preservation of his people.
